LO2: Graphic Design Packages Moodboards

Film Poster:

These film posters I have looked at have either a close up of the face of the actor/s or a medium shot of  the actor/s always looking towards the camera. The top three then have the a location or setting at the bottom of the actors, and then also below the actor/s is the title of the film, this is typically centred. They also contain the names of some of the actors and it also credits people in the production. I have also noticed that they usually have a filter, some being monochrome and then others being a hue like red or blue.

DVD Cover:

The DVD covers have 3 sides, the front cover, spine and back cover. The front cover typically resembles a film poster from before the DVD cover (as seen by the 'Shutter Island' and 'The Silence of the lambs' film posters), the composition may have have changed a little when transitioning to DVD cover.  The spine always has the title in the centre of the spine, it then has an image of either the actor/s or the front cover. Finally, the back cover always have a blurb a few images and a few other typical information such as duration and credits. The overall DVD cover is usually dark toned with the text (mainly the blurb) being white.

Web Banner:

Website banners can be very similar to film posters, it  has the trailer to one side and then some of the elements from the film posters to the side.

LO2: Audience Profile

Age: 16 - 21
Gender: Male (60%) - Female (40%)
ABC1 Grade: D & Above

Audience Profile:
Mike Darly - Male - 18 Years Old
Mike Darly is a student studying Media at his local college, he is hoping to make it as film writer, he also wants to direct a film too. He adores the indie genre of films and goes to see them at local film festivals too and regularly visits a cinema that views these types of films called 'Showroom'. He loves films by Warp Films, with his favourite being 'Dead Man's Shoes', he would like to see a film inspired by this.

LO2: Rough Sketches and Photoshop Mock Ups

Logo/Title Idea Sketches

No. 1
Some of the titles I had looked at were not thick and bold, but were more slender and thin, like this one. The font that will be used is a Sans Serif but the 'trees' coming out of the I,L and N are extensions to the font and are not apart of the font. The colour I will use is a white, this is because it'll stand out from the darker tones of the products it will be used in.

No. 2
This title is again a sans serif font and is ideally going to be the impact font. There will be a forest treetops in a black silhouette that goes across the text inside of the font. The colour of the silhouette is black whilst the rest of the letters are red. I chose red because this connotes danger, this makes sense as the forest is dangerous in the film.

No. 3

This title is a sans serif and will ideally be the impact font, the background of the logo is supposed to represent roots from trees, this can connote family roots, which I chose to connote as the brothers in the film are related. The roots will be red to not just connote danger but it will also denote blood because the brothers are related through blood. The colour of the text will be a bone white colour as it contrasts well with the red.

Mock-Up of Film Poster:

The purpose of the film poster I have made a mock-up of are to advertise and persuade the audiences its target towards to see or purchase the film, most likely if the poster is placed on a billboard that would be shown to publics through pathways and roads. The target audience for the film poster are for the majority males aged between 16 and 21, especially with the two characters shown being teenagers themselves, it could easily make an ideal self and so relate to the target audiences. The film poster could easily be seen by the audience who are the social grade D (This also being our target audience’s social grade) as they don’t really need to spend anything to see the film poster on a billboard.

DVD Cover Sketch:

Mock-Up of DVD Cover:

The purpose of the film's DVD cover I have made a mock-up of is to advertise and persuade the audiences its target towards to see or purchase the film, the DVD cover will be typically placed on cases containing the film and will be seen in supermarkets (Such as Tesco) and film rental shops. The target audience for the DVD cover are for the majority males aged between 16 and 21, especially with the two characters shown being teenagers themselves, it could easily make an ideal self and so relate to the target audiences. The DVD cover could easily be seen by the audience who are the social grade D (This also being our target audience’s social grade) as their spending power could easily buy a DVD (typically costing around £10) so would go to a DVD rental shop and see the film DVD cover and hopefully be persuaded to purchase it.

Web Banner Sketch:

Mock-Up of Web Banner:

The purpose of the film's web banner I have made a mock-up of is to advertise and persuade the audiences its target towards to see or purchase the film, the web banner would definitely be seen on websites, most likely on film related films (Such as IMDb and Cineworld.co.uk), and even websites suited to the target audience, such as IGN.com. The target audience for the web banner are for the majority males aged between 16 and 21, especially with the two characters shown being teenagers themselves, it could easily make an ideal self and so relate to the target audiences. The DVD cover could easily be seen by the audience who are the social grade D (This also being our target audience’s social grade) as all they would need is a typical smartphone or laptop to view the site that the banner would be on, and accessing websites have no fee and so can easily be accessed with a basic internet connection.

LO2: Font Style Ideas

Font Idea 1:
Scorched Earth (http://www.dafont.com/scorched-earth.font?text=Silent+Captive)
I have took this font into mind because it's a sans serif font meaning that it's bold, this helps because it would be more visible and attractive to the audience, this would help meet the purpose of the graphic design, which is to promote and advertise the film to an audience to get them to go see the film. The font would be suitable to the target audience who see the film as they are around their late teens and early 20's and I feel that because the logo connotes a more youthful tone due to the rough feel the text. The target audience who also see the film may likely be fans of the psychological thriller genre and so the scratched look of the font, in my opinion, looks like it has been scratched or worn away by someone tearing at it, most likely an insane person with an unstable mental state, this can be a common trope in psychological thrillers.

Font Idea 2:
Filth of Icarus (http://www.dafont.com/filth-of-icarus.font?text=Silent+Captive&psize=l&back=theme)
This font is again a sans serif font, but with the style of the font I feel is also a cross between a serif font too as there are extensions to the foundation of the font. The font is also quite thin compared to the other fonts, it's slender form doesn't really target a specific audience, although it would fit the younger audiences such as 18 to early 30's as it looks more slick and modern compared to a more simple font like Impact. I think this font is suitable for the psychological thriller genre, due to the look of it reminding me of a scene where a patient would write with their blood in a isolation chamber, it also looks like it's deteriorating which could connote to the mind doing so in the film, this would make it easy to attract the audiences who enjoy this genre.

Font Idea 3:
On the Horizon (http://www.dafont.com/on-the-horizon.font?text=Silent+Captive&psize=l&back=theme)
This font is another sans serif font, but I like to think it mixes both idea one and two, it is still slender but is also quite bold. It also isn't straight and is quite uneven in proportions, compared to basic default fonts. I believe, like the others, that this font not only fits the genre, but is also suitable for the audiences that the graphic design it's used in will be targeted at. It's also quite bold too, to say it's a slender font, this may make it more noticable to the audiences too.

LO2: House Style Ideas

The colour theme I am going for is a red and black, I feel like these juxtapose well against each other. The black connotes death, that the brother deals with in the film and the red connotes danger, what the brother faces in the forest. The purpose of these colours would be to get the attention of the targeted audience, I've had to compromise with the colours being less vibrant and attractive to make the colours fit the theme of the genre.

The ‘Impact’ font is bold, it's a sans serif font that is easy to read and at a medium to large size would be very noticable and readable from  quite a bit away, this makes it easily attract audiences to the film products it's used in. This font will most likely be used for my logo, this would also make it easier to edit or stylise in my own way to fit the themes of the products.

The ‘Filth of Icarus’ font is slim and also a sans serif font, it's alot more stylised than the simplistic Impact font I'll be using for the logo. It'll most likely be used for the tagline and other text on the products. I believe it would also contrast against the bolder font and because it's also more stylised, with the wearing of the text making it look damaged, it would probably attract the audience to the poster.

Potential Font Ideas that are based in the same genre (Thriller):

LO2: Graphic Design Ideas and Finalisation

The film poster is a poster that advertises the film, having an image, name/logo, sometimes reviews, cast and a release date. The DVD cover usually resembles the film poster, or it can be entirely different, the back of the cover has a blurb that summarises the story and has a few more images and the spine always has the title/ logo of the film and age rating (which is also on the front). The T-shirt is apart of merchandise and usually has the name/logo of the film on it. The magazine/newspaper ad also usually pastiches the film poster, but has maybe more detail such as the ratings. The website page is a website dedicated to the film and usually has the trailer and name/logo of the film, but also a few images from the film and information. The website banner is a minimised and simple version of the film poster, it also may have the trailer and a way of booking tickets for the film. The Billboard poster is a much bigger version of the film poster and is in a landscape orientation. A bus poster is like the billboard poster, but may have some bits cut off to fit onto the ad area of the bus (mostly on double decker buses). I will be doing the DVD cover, film poster and website banner for my graphic design package.

LO2: My Production

I will be doing a graphic design package for a film production called 'Silent Captive'. It is a psychological thriller that is mostly set in a mysterious forest, it follows a protagonist looking for his missing brother who then starts to hallucinate and go crazy with guilt whilst searching for him.
